1.5 Tumblin Crazy Frog

Eighteen months is a notable age. Zeth is 1.5 years old now but it seems like just yesterday we first met sweet wrinkly little newborn Zeth in a hospital on a neighbor island. Fast forward 18 months and Zeth’s verbal skills are most notable. He loves to talk and will sometimes tell us long stories that he thinks are very amusing in his deep raspy voice with lots of hand jesters while we only wish we could understand what he was saying. He is parroting more and more what we say to him much to our delight.
Some of my favorite words in Zeth's vocabulary today:
dYesss (Yes) - With a smiling emphatic head nodding.

No - No tears or dramatics, usually just matter of fact expressing his desires or intentions.

Ka-ka (this means anything that is dirty, messy, smelly or otherwise questionable in appearance)

Aa-poo (N’a plus is French for ‘no more’ and is usually pronounced at the end of each bottle)

Ba-Ba (bottle) - We’re going to have a very hard time weaning this kid from his bottle. He still wakes up around 3a just about every morning for a bottle. If I’m anywhere accessible, he insists on me holding him in my lap to feed him. He loves to play with/pull on hair while quaffing back a ba ba. I love these cuddly moments too much to rush him out of this habit.

Hott - Learning to differentiate temperatures, anything not room temp is deemed Hot. He'll blow to help the cooling effort even if it's something very cold.

Ma Ma - A recent game is to yell out Ma Ma repeatedly as if playing Marco Polo, until he can see me and then continues to herald my auspicious title even when I’m standing right beside him.

Dad-dee – Have I mentioned what a wonderful daddy Ram is to our kids? He’s truly wonderful with them.

Dod-de (doggy) - Sometimes it’s hard to differentiate between Daddy & doggie but he absolutely adores doggies. Bawl – our house is always littered with balls. His favorite ball game is to throw balls from the kitchen to the living room over the kitchen counter then run around and throw them back again.

Tuck – Trucks and other large vehicles are very exciting at this age.

Ba-bat or Ba-ba-bats - Enjoys wildly splashing water everywhere in the bath tub. The other night he found a new way to do cannonballs and would exclaim 'ba-boom' as he would jump up and land smack on his behind in the water. Looked painful to me but he was unphased and undeterred in his task to empty the contents of the tub onto the floor. His big sis was doing her part to help too of course.

Ba – You gotta pay attention to context with this word because sometimes it can mean “ball,” sometimes it’s the shortened form of “ba-ba” and yet other times, it’s southern drawl for “bye.”

Dee-doo – (Thank you) He is very polite and almost always says dee-doo at the appropriate moment.

Mah-men (Amen) When we say prayers, he will typically fold his arms and bow his head and hold that pose for about 3-seconds. But at the end of the prayer, he stops whatever he’s doing and will say “mah-men” along with us.

When he’s being naughty and hitting someone, we’ll tell him to stop and “be nice.” He usually thinks about it for a few seconds then almost always his better nature will prevail and he’ll lean over and give his victim a kiss and sometimes pet their head softly.

He is asserting his independence at meals more and more insisting on eating his food with his own fork/spoon. He just wants to feed himself usually and will reject being fed when he knows he can do it himself. This is great except when we want to keep his clothes clean. I tried using a bib but that effort was as futile as putting lipstick on a fish.

He loves taking responsibility for putting his own dirty diapers in the trash can pronouncing ‘Ka Ka’ almost in a reverent whisper all the way then giving himself a round of applause when the task is complete.

Mr. Rhythm & Soul loves to dance by bouncing and spinning in circles with his arms up in the air. He imitates his sister whenever he can and frequently can be heard imitating his favorite you tube Crazy Frog clip. I personally prefer Zeth’s ‘ouWeeeeeeh’ to the original version. He has no fear of pain as evidenced by his head-first dive rolls on this clip of tandem gymnastics with his sister. He waves goodbye with his palms facing up clinching his fingers open & closed in fists. Dad-dee thinks he’s trying to throw a Spiderman web with this action but so far, no webs. Naturally he blows generous kisses along with the farewell Spidy-web-waves.

Lil' Rascal

I went back and edited yesterday's post and inserted some pictures and think I hit the memory limit for a single post because it wouldn't let me upload any more pictures to it. I'm all about lots of pictures so I decided to remove the following paragraph from that post and build a whole new entry just around the little boy who melts my heart daily.

Last weekend we went to a party at a friend's house and little Zeth was just having a ball climbing up & down their stairs. He miscalculated and tumbled down the steps giving his nose a healthy carpet-burn. After a quick hug to calm his spinning head, he was back at it. Like a typical boy, he was quick to forget his painful ordeal and he fell down the steps two additional times. He has a very cute scab on his nose that doesn't seem to bother him one bit.

I snapped a bunch of pictures of his cute little scabbed up nose and just can't decide between them so here he is in slow motion. :)

This poor kid has to really work hard for his teeth. He went through another round of misery with an ear infection last week and is on antibiotics again but hasn't popped any new teeth to the surface still. I don't remember when he got his last ones out. Hopefully he won't have a repeat ear episode like last summer while we're in Tahiti later this month for my bro-in-law's wedding. Can't believe he's barely 18-months and will already be going to Tahiti for the second time. Gotta love family events.

Zana & Zeth love to play together. Their latest trick is doing tandem somersaults. It just makes me giggle to watch them go at it with reckless abandon. Zeth is learning so much from his big sister. She taught him how to make these enormous cheeky grins. You can see him working on it in one of the photos above. He is a little kissing machine these days too. Constantly sharing his love with everyone. Such the lady killer.

Off the Beaten Path

Went for a run today - in the wind & rain. It felt great to be out in the cool, refreshing gusty air. Decided to take a few new streets I normally don't venture down and do a little exploring in my own neighborhood (well, sort of). I was amazed to see how many beautiful large new homes have replaced old broken down wrecks in the old part of town. At the turning point of my run, I came across probably the friendliest place on earth (well, maybe not). Approaching the long driveway there is a large board propped up against a coconut tree with a fair and seemingly innocuous request painted on it. "Do not pick coconuts" I can understand and respect that. Coconut poaching is a problem here. A few paces more and the full view of the expansive driveway opens up to reveal several additional requests & instructions. Warnings like "Never mind the dog, Beware of the owner", "You're being watched by security cameras", "One way in, no way out", "Stay in car Wild dogs running" "Do not take surfboards. You will be 'Shot' Wounded be 'Shot' again" and the most memorable one said "If you're not blood, you will bleed" I'll just let you enjoy the scene for yourselves.
I'm a sucker for amusing signs and found this scene very amusing. I'm not sure the owners would appreciate me posting pictures of their fiercely private property so I'll just leave the location unnamed. For fear of being shot, wounded and shot again. :)

I met my goal of improving on my previous time in the Great Aloha Run again this year. It was my 8th time participating in the 13K fun run and I've improved every year with last year being the one exception. I slipped backwards by about 24 seconds last year but more than made up for it this year coming in 1:30 faster than my previous best. This, for a self-proclaimed lifelong non-runner (my abhorance of running in my youth was one of the many reasons I took up swimming as a sport), after spending the weekend playing on the Big Island and flying to HNL 11 hours before the race began, discovering my i-pod had no power remaining as I walked up to the starting line and stopping for hugs with my favorite fans mid-race.
Coming in at 1:25:58 this year was a proud and exciting moment for me. Now I've broken the 1:25 barrier I can't wait to see how I do next year. After the run, we went back to our hotel near the airport and cooled off in the pool.
I'm all out of order here so let's hop back to Kona, where our great little Valentines/President's Day weekend trip began. The reason for the excursion was to go to the Temple with our friends Henny & Gen and their kids who were eternally sealed together as a family in a sacred ceremony on 2/14/09. It was beautiful and such a happy occasion. The rest of the weekend was spent mainly in the many waters of the Waikoloa resort with our FHE gang. We attended the Kona Stake Conference Sunday morning and saw some old school friends then took a little drive (1.5 hrs) down to South Point to visit the most southern point in the US. Took a couple pictures of the cliff divers, of the wales breaching and of the awesome waves pounding in the high winds. It was breath-taking. Here's a sample of our weekend in Kona, HI.

Every Valentine's Day at Zana's school they hold a "Sweetheart Lunch" where the parents come and eat with their kids. It's kinda a big deal. This year they had members of the National Guard serving in the kitchen and while waiting for the kids to show up, they were dancing with the teaching staff to the slow jams being blasted by the DJ in the room with his massive sound system. It's always fun to see the kids get all excited when their parents arrive. At the same time, it's a little heartbraking to see the few kids whose parents can't make it. Their little faces can't help but seep their disappointment. I'm so grateful both my husband and I work close to home and can be involved with our kids for special events like this.
